The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has been testing a new fall foliage map this year, with the latest release showing that Lebanon County is approaching the period of the best color.

This period of peak color intensity is happening later than normal, with officials at Bald Eagle State Park reporting that the area is at least two weeks behind last year’s color

According to the DCNR, the northeast region is one of three in the world to exhibit fall autumn color. The others are the British Isles and parts of northwestern Europe and northeastern China and northern Japan.

Over the next two weeks you may want to consider hiking a nearby forest area, like Mount Gretna’s Governor Dick, ranked one of the 10 most insanely beautiful destinations for fall colors by UncoveringPA.

Swatara State Park and Memorial Lake State Park (surrounded by Fort Indiantown Gap) are highlighted by the state as being great spots to see fall colors.

Fort Indiantown Gap in northern Lebanon County is already showing some lovely color, as seen in these photos taken by Zane Craig (released under Creative Commons).

Nice creek you got there. Would be a shame if anyone fell into it.
