Fatal Vehicle Accident – On July 8, 2020 at 2:07 p.m., this crash occurred as Unit 1, a 2019 International Harvester LT625, driven by Operator 1, Charles Reid II, a 60 year old Jacksonville, FL man, was traveling south on I 81 South in the left lane approaching mile marker 86.7. As a result of slowed/stopped traffic on I 81 South (reference incident # PA2020-950294 – Disabled Tractor/Trailer I 81 South mile marker 82.2), heavy rainfall and poor visibility, Unit 3, a 2016 Peterbilt 579, driven by Operator 3, a 51 year old Midlothian, VA man, and Unit 6, a 2018 Ford F-150XLT, driven by Operator 6, a 53 year old Mt. Airy, MD man, accompanied by Passenger 1, a 14 year old Ijamsville, MD male, were stopped in the left lane on I 81 South, just south of mile marker 82.7, with Unit 6 located in front of Unit 3 and Unit 4, a 2014 Kenworth Northwest T800, driven by Operator 4, a 30 year old Dothan, AL man, being stopped in the right lane along the right side of Unit 3’s trailing unit.

Unit 5, a 2001 GMC 2500HD pickup/utility trailer, driven by Operator 5, a 44 year old Landisburg man, which was originally in the left lane immediately behind Unit 3, had quickly moved left over the left shoulder and into the center grass median, after Operator 5 observed a tractor/trailer (Unit 2, a 2007 Kenworth Northwest T680, driven by Operator 2, a 34 year old Sedalia, MO man) approaching his location from the rear and did not believe that vehicle (Unit 2) would be able to stop safely. Unit 2 was able to slow/stop in the left lane prior to striking the rear of Unit 3’s trailing unit at this moment, being in the approximate location where Unit 5 had just been.

Witness 1 was traveling in the left lane, approaching the area of I 81 South, prior to mile marker 86.7, at a slower rate of speed (as a result of heavy rain and poor visibility), with Unit 1 traveling behind her vehicle (same direction), with both of their vehicles approaching Unit 2’s, Unit 3’s, Unit 4’s, Unit 5’s, and Unit 6’s current locations. Witness 1 wished to move her vehicle from the left lane into the right lane but was unable to do so safely after observing Unit 1 move from the left lane into the right lane and proceed to pass her vehicle on the right side at a higher rate of speed. Unit 1 passed Witness 1 in the right lane and then changed lanes from the right lane to the left lane, in front of Witness 1’s tractor/trailer.

As Unit 1 was moving into the left lane, the left front end of Unit 1’s tractor struck the rear end (right side) of Unit 2’s trailing unit in the left lane, almost immediately after Operator 2 had been able to bring his tractor/trailer to a stop. Unit 2 was pushed forward, striking the rear of Unit 3’s trailing unit with its (Unit 2) tractor’s front end, followed by Unit 2’s trailing unit going airborne and traveling sideways (jackknife/overturn to the left) into the center grass median along the left shoulder. Unit 2’s trailing unit continued sideways (overturning to its left) until its left side struck the top of Unit 5’s trailing unit’s rear end, resulting in Unit 2 coming to final rest with its tractor in the trailing unit.

Unit 5 came to final rest in the center grass median, facing southwest, after its trailing unit was struck/trapped by the left side of Unit 2’s trailing unit. Unit 1 continued forward, being mostly in the left lane and partially straddling the center dotted line when it struck the left rear end of Unit 4’s trailing unit with its (Unit 1’s) between the left and right travel lanes (mostly within the left lane), with the cab portion of Unit 1 being partially detached from its frame, facing south in the left lane. Unit 4 remained approximately in the same location post-impact as it was located pre-impact, coming to final rest in the right lane, facing southwest. Unit 3 traveled forward a short distance, after being struck by the front end of Unit 2’s tractor and struck the rear of Unit 6 with the front end of its (Unit 3’s) tractor in the left lane. Unit 3 came to final rest mostly in the left lane with the tractor’s left front end on the left shoulder, facing southwest. Unit 6 traveled forward a short distance in the left lane on I 81 South after being struck by Unit 3, however, Operator 6 was able to drive his vehicle onto the left shoulder, just prior to the crossover located on I 81 South at approximately mile marker 86.6, coming to final rest under its own power, facing southwest.

Witness 1 brought her Unit to final rest under its own power on I 81 South, in the left lane, just prior to Unit 1’s and Unit 2’s location of point of impact (mile marker 86.7). Witness 2 was stopped in the left lane at the I 81 South mile marker 86.6 crossover, just southwest of this crash’s location. Witness 3 was stopped in the left lane on I 81 South, approximately six to seven vehicles behind Witness 1. This was the scene upon the trooper’s arrival. Operator 1 was pronounced deceased on scene by the coroner. Operator 2 was transported via EMS to the WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital for evaluation after reporting injuries of unknown severity. There were no other injuries as a result of this crash. (Editor’s note: Operator’s 1 name is included as this was a fatal crash.)
