Tony’s Mining Company, the iconic restaurant in Cornwall, closed in April but will most likely re-open with new owners later this year.
According to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page by general manager and owner Jean Kotkas, the restaurant at 211 Rexmont Road closed April 3. Her April 12 post reads, “My last night open at Tony’s (April 2) will be a night I will always remember. The showering of cards, gifts, memories and love will stay with me forever! What a party it turned out to be! I will miss you all! Thank you for your support and the friendships that have grown between us throughout the years! Kudos to my great staff that stayed with me until the very end. It was a great ride!”
Prospective new owners are Jennifer and Steve Bushey, who own and operate Rettew’s Catering and Manheim Twin Kiss, both in Manheim, Lancaster County. The sale of Tony’s is pending state Liquor Control Board approval of the liquor license transfer to the Manheim couple.
“It’s a Lebanon County gem,” Jennifer Bushey said about Tony’s Mining Company during a May 12 interview.
“We’re hoping to keep the original charm and feel of the restaurant,” she added, “We want to retain the copper table tops and copper plates that Tony’s has become known for.”
They’d also like to add a patio or deck for seasonal dining and add a bistro-style menu. Bushey said more details will be available once the sale is finalized.
According to information on the restaurant’s website, Tony’s Mining Company was built in 1974. It was the vision of Anthony Cek, a second generation miner, who wanted to serve “great food in an environment that captured the essence of the industry that made Cornwall famous”.
