For the 30th straight year, Cornwall Manor has awarded scholarships to employees or their families seeking to further their education.

At an Aug. 4 reception, $3,500 Ralph L. Weik Memorial Scholarships were awarded to three employees:

  • Julia Sell, a nursing assistant who started at Cornwall Manor in 2019. The Lancaster resident will be a junior at James Madison University and is working toward a degree in Health Sciences.
  • Kristie Poiron, an employee since 2007. She has been a Nursing Assistant, Medical Records Clerk, and is currently Front Desk Manager. She is a student at HACC pursuing a business degree. She resides in Myerstown with her two daughters.
  • Jocelyn Shaffer, Health Center Activity Supervisor and Compliance Officer since 2018. She has a B.S. degree from Brigham Young University and is a Certified Nursing Assistant. She will pursue an associate’s degree in nursing from Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences to become a registered nurse. She lives in Elizabethtown with her two daughters.

The Ralph L. Weik Scholarship Fund was established in 1991 to honor the memory of the dedicated maintenance employee who served the 550 resident, not-for-profit continuing care retirement community for 27 years.

It has awarded over 120 scholarships to Cornwall Manor employees, their spouses, and dependents to assist them with post-secondary education. The selection committee is composed of retired educators who reside at Cornwall Manor.

Employees and residents participate in annual fund raisers to help build the fund. Thanks to their efforts, it has grown to over $164,000.
