Editor’s Note: In 2021, Michael and Nicole Borrell began reviewing Lebanon Valley’s restaurants and eating attractions as the Lebanon Valley Food Critics. Since then, the couple has aimed to offer unbiased reviews of the eating and drinking establishments the Lebanon Valley has to offer. LebTown is pleased to be partnering with LVFC to share these reviews with our readers. Bon appétit!

For my first venture out into the community after surgery, we decided to head to Palmyra for breakfast before our day began. We landed at Royal D’Chocolate Restaurant, on East Main Street with parking available along the side and rear of the restaurant.

I was looking forward to a good homestyle breakfast, and that’s what we found. We have always driven past this place and never thought about stopping until today.

We opened the door to a clean, nicely decorated dining room with plenty of seating. We got there later in the morning, so we started out as the only ones in the restaurant, but several others joined us as we ate our breakfast. They seemed to be regulars saying hi to the staff, who were very friendly and kind.

We sat down and perused the menu of typical diner breakfast dishes: pancakes, waffles, egg dishes, and sandwiches and wraps.

I felt the need for something both sweet and savory, so I chose the pancakes and sausage ($9.99) which included 3 plate sized pancakes and two sausage patties. You also had the choice to have sausage links.

The pancakes were on par with other pancakes. I did note that they could have cleaned the grill better as remnants from the grill were on the pancakes. I could only eat one pancake and one sausage patty while we were there, and I took the rest home for a meal later in the week, which when warmed up was still just as tasty.

The other meal was sausage gravy over biscuits and home fries, extra crispy ($9.99). You could tell the sausage gravy was not the canned variety, which was a big plus.

Again, the dish was what we would call “average”. Good, but not great. It could have used a little more sausage, and some seasoning. The biscuits were flakey with a slight crisp to the edge.

We also got a kid’s meal of two scrambled eggs, toast and bacon ($5.99), which were gobbled up by our little one.

Our Take: Royal D’Chocolate has plenty of breakfast options and provides generous portion size. Though we considered our meals average, they were not from a box or can. We are willing to go back because of the staff and to try other items on the menu that are freshly made.

We give Royal D’s Chocolate Diner ???.
