The Quittapahilla Audubon Society has resumed offering field trips to the general public, although because of the pandemic the organization still is not offering its usually slate of monthly indoor programs.

“Mother nature continues to provide some healthy entertainment,” Audubon Society spokeswoman Ruth Krebs said in a release. “Everyone is welcome.”

Here are some upcoming activities:

  • Sunday, Oct. 3, observations of flora and fauna at Swatara State Park. Meet leader Fritz Heilman (717-273-0487) at 2:30 p.m. at the Trout Run Trailhead parking lot.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 19, observations of flora and fauna along the Lebanon Valley Rail to Trail at Jonestown. Meet leader Fritz Heilman (717-273-0487) at 9 a.m. at the Jonestown trailhead.
  • Sunday, Nov. 7, observations of local birds at State Game Land 145. Meet leader Jim Fiorentino (717-269-0675) at 9 a.m. at the parking lot of the Colebrook trailhead of the Lebanon Valley Rail to Trail.
  • Sunday, Nov. 14, observations of late season flora and fauna along the Lebanon Valley Rail to Trail at Jonestown. Meet leader Fritz Heilman (717-273-0487) at 2:30 p.m. at the Jonestown trailhead.
  • Saturday, Dec. 18, 42nd annual Christmas Bird Count. This event includes walking and driving to count birds within a prescribed area. Contact Fritz Heilman at 717-273-0487 for more details.

The Audubon Society also recommends that, because of ongoing COVID concerns, interested participants should check the website for unforeseen changes or for updates to the schedule.

COVID, Krebs noted, “is making gatherings most difficult. And we’re uncertain where we will be able to meet in the future. Ideas? We are listening….”
