On trick-or-treat night, we needed to grab a quick meal before the hundreds of ghouls visited our neighborhood. So, we ran over to a quaint corner sandwich shop on the southside, Marco’s Pizza.

Located at the corner of Locust and South 8th streets, Marco’s opens at 3 p.m. daily and offers dine-in, takeout, and delivery. They have an expansive menu available on their website and offer a discount for cash purchases.

For today’s meal, we ordered a small Special Stromboli ($8.49), a small cheesesteak hoagie ($7.25), and onion rings ($3.99). I called in my order shortly after they opened and went to pick-up 30 minutes later.

The Special Stromboli came with ham, pepperoni, sausage, sweet peppers, onions, mushrooms, mozzarella cheese, and pizza sauce. The sheer size of the stromboli meant that it was going to be at least two meals for me. Perfectly baked, the stromboli was crunchy on the outside and soft to the bite. The flavor of the ingredients spoke for themselves, and I could taste everything in there. I will order this again.

The cheesesteak hoagie was not a favorite of one critic this time around, mainly because I ordered it with sweet peppers instead of hot peppers – my bad. The sandwich came with lettuce and tomatoes nestled under the cheesy steak on Marco’s own rolls. Even with my mix-up on the peppers, I like the sandwich. Our other critic wants to reserve her official declaration until she gets it with hot peppers, though the previous cheesesteak was very delicious when we ordered here before. The third time’s the charm, right?

It’s still hard to find onion rings out in the wild and these battered beauties hit the spot.

Our take: Marco’s is a corner pizza and sandwich shop that offers a big menu and even bigger sandwiches and bolis. The flavor matches the portion size. The crew working behind the counter works hard and takes pride in the food they put out. If you’re looking for a quality sandwich, you shouldn’t have to look much further.

We give this place ????.
