Editor’s Note: In 2021, Michael and Nicole Borrell began reviewing Lebanon Valley’s restaurants and eating attractions as the Lebanon Valley Food Critics. Since then, the couple has aimed to offer unbiased reviews of the eating and drinking establishments the Lebanon Valley has to offer. LebTown is pleased to be partnering with LVFC to share these reviews with our readers. Bon appétit!

I posed the question to our followers and the response was overwhelming: Where can I find the best doughnut in the Lebanon Valley? Thank you to all who offered suggestions and responses.

We are going to run a mini-series, The Doughnut Wars, where we will attempt to find the best doughnut in the region. We will try a vast selection from each location and pick our top three. At the end, we will write a Lebanon Valley Top 5 Best Doughnut in the Valley list.

Our fourth stop is a location that I have never been to. I’ve never even heard of this place before. So, thanks to our followers for mentioning Twilight Acres Creamery & Bakery.

Located along Route 422 on the far east end of the Valley in Stouchsburg, Berks County, this stand-alone shop sells a variety of sweet treats.

An inside view of Twilight Acres.

Today, we ordered a half dozen with powdered vanilla cream, custard-filled, cinnamon sugar cream-filled, and glazed. They only had four kinds of doughnuts available today. The holding case is small, but they are continuously making new and fresh doughnuts.

Upon first bite, I immediately noticed the fluffy freshness of the doughnut. It seemed to maintain its fluffy shape and did not compress. One critic noted that the doughnut tastes like it’s crossed with a funnel cake.

The cream filling was something I had never tasted before. It had a subtle vanilla flavor with a light texture to it. Truly amazing. Our tastebuds were spoiled by all the great doughnuts, and this may be some of the best yet.

I wish they would have had more variety to choose from because these limited few were so good.

The LVFC Top Three

3: Custard-Filled – A smooth custard cream with a soft chocolate top; a good blend.

2: Cinnamon Sugar Cream-Filled – Sweetness overload, but in a good way. The sugar will remain on your fingers.

1: Powdered Vanilla Cream – A unique cream flavor mixed with the fluffiness, more than worth the drive to get some.
