After resuming field trips this fall, Quittapahilla Audubon Society has announced its next round of free events open to the public through the end of March 2022.

Here are some upcoming activities:

  • Saturday, Jan. 1. (Lebanon Valley Rail Trail)
    Kick off the new year with a winter bird walk. Meet at 10 a.m. at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center parking lot next to the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail. Leader Jim Fiorentino (717-269-0675).
  • Saturday, Jan. 29 (Barnegat Lighthouse & Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge)
    This is an all day, weather permitting trip. Limit eight folks. Contact Jim Fiorentino (717-269-0675).
  • Sunday, Feb. 20 (Union Canal Tunnel Park)
    This walk will be for the observation of flora and fauna (including data collecting for the 25th annual “Great Backyard Bird Count”). Meet at 2 p.m. at the park’s 25th Street parking lot. Leader Fritz Heilman (717-273-0487).
  • Sunday, Feb. 27 (Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area)
    We’ll be observing Snow Geese and other migrating birds. Meet at 10 a.m. at the visitor center parking lot. Leader Jim Fiorentino (717-269-0675).
  • Saturday, March 19 (Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area)
    This field trip is for the observation of migrating waterfowl and resident birds. Meet at 9 a.m. at the visitor center parking lot. Leader Fritz Heilman (717-273-0487).
  • Sunday, March 20 (Timberdoodle at Swatara State Park)
    This is the first of two trips to observe the ‘sky dance’ of the woodcock. Meet Sunday at 6:45 p.m. at the Trout Run Trail parking lot. Bring a flashlight. Leader Gary Kinkley (717-503-4027).
  • Sunday, March 27 (Timberdoodle at Swatara State Park)
    This is the second of two trips to observe the ‘sky dance’ of the woodcock. Meet Sunday at 6:45 p.m. in the upper parking lot. Bring a flashlight. Leader Gary Kinkley (717-503-4027).

Group size varies from a half dozen to a baker’s dozen or so, according to QAS publicity chair Ruth Krebs. There’s no need to be a member to participate and Krebs said that now is a fun time to spot birds with fewer leaves on the trees.
