A physician at the Lebanon VA Medical Center was recognized by Penn State College of Medicine for exemplary instruction based on student evaluations.
Dr. Adam J. Albert received the 2021 Medicine Clerkship Teacher of the Year Award for Affiliate Faculty in the Medicine Category, the second VA physician to receive this honor (the first was in 2016). He currently serves as a hospitalist (a physician who treats a variety of conditions) at the VA.
“It’s a privilege to teach future doctors,” Albert said in a VA press release announcing the award. “I always hear our Veterans comment on how they enjoy working with the medical students as well as residents and being able to make their education more meaningful is an honor for our Veterans.”
Albert graduated from the Penn State College of Medicine in 2005 and completed his residency in internal medicine at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in 2008.
Students cited Albert’s genuine concern for and dedication to individual learners, his commitment to teaching demonstrated by time spent both during and outside of rounds, and the skilled way in which he models competent and passionate care at the bedside, the VA press release noted.
The VA said that since 2016, more than 1,000 healthcare professionals from Penn State College of Medicine have been trained through rotations at the Lebanon VA Medical Center.
The award was bestowed on Albert by Dr. Nicholas Duca, director of the Medicine Clerkship and Acting Internship Program for Medical Students at Penn State College of Medicine, at a Jan. 25 ceremony held at the Hershey campus.
