The Quittapahilla Audubon Society (QAS) has announced its next round of free events open to the public through the end of May 2022.

With spring and bird activity just around the corner, here are some upcoming local activities to consider:

  • Sunday, March 27. (Memorial Lake State Park)
    See the Timberdoodle at Memorial Lake State Park – the second of two trips to observe the ‘sky dance’ of the woodcock. Meet Sunday at 6:45 p.m. in the upper parking lot off Boundary Road. Bring a flashlight. Leader Gary Kinkley (717-503-4027).
  • Saturday, April 16. (Susquehanna State Park)
    Join QAS on a spring wildflower and birding hike at Fern Cliff in the Benton Ravine, a registered wildflower and old growth forest preserve located in southern Lancaster County. The group will leave from the south end of the old Kmart lot parking lot at 8:30 a.m. Car pooling is encouraged! Pack a lunch to be enjoyed at the scenic Susquehanna State Park after the hike.   • Saturday, April 30. (Hammer Creek)
    QAS heads to Hammer Creek for observation of flora and fauna. Meet at 8 a.m. in the Horseshoe Trail parking lot at the intersection of Pumping Station Road and Route 322. Leader Fritz Heilman (717-273-0487).
  • Tuesday, May 3. (State Game Land #156)
    Warbler Walk #1 with QAS! Meet at 8 a.m. at the Miners Village ballfield. Leader Jim Fiorentino (717-269-0675).
  • Wednesday, May 4. (State Game Lands #145)
    Warbler Walk #2 with QAS! Meet at 8 a.m. at the white barn off Epler Road, between Route 117 and Colebrook Road. Leader Jim Fiorentino (717-269-0675).
  • Sunday, May 15. (Hammer Creek)
    Warbler Walk #3 with QAS! Located by Obie Road & Michter’s Road. Meet 9 a.m. on Rexmont Road at the Old Rexmont Dam parking lot, just past and across from white corral fencing. This is about 0.7 mile from the intersection of Rexmont Road and Route 419. Leader Jim Fiorentino (717-269-0675).
  • Tuesday, May 17. (Lebanon Valley Rail Trail)
    QAS will walk along the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail at Jonestown to observe flora and fauna. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Jonestown trailhead on Old Route 22, Jonestown Road. Leader Fritz Heilman (717-273-0487).
  • Thursday, May 19. (Middle Creek)
    The warblers deserve one more field trip! This will be Warbler Walk #4 with QAS, at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area. Meet at 9 a.m. at the visitor center parking lot. Leader Jim Fiorentino (717-269-0675).

Group size varies from a half dozen to a baker’s dozen or so, according to QAS publicity chair Ruth Krebs. Typically no registration is needed in advance.
