A $5.5 million pavement preservation project for 14 miles of I-78 and I-81 will begin again after a winter hiatus on Monday, March 21, starting with the westbound I-78 ramp to Route 22 in Lebanon County.

PennDOT said the project will improve ride quality on the highways and extend the life of the concrete pavement.

The work will include full replacement of deteriorated sections of shoulder along the entire I-78 ramp, as well as milling and paving, upgrading the guiderail, and performing other miscellaneous construction.

As part of this work, expect shoulder closers and traffic shifts, possibly through Wednesday, March 30. After the ramp work has been completed, diamond grinding will be performed on eastbound I-78 and then on southbound I-81 and westbound I-78.

The work in Lebanon County will take place on I-78 from the Route 72 overpass to the I-81 interchange and on southbound I-81 from the I-78 interchange to approximately the Indiantown Gap Road overpass.

JD Eckman, Inc., of Chester County is prime contractor on the overall project, which is scheduled to be completed by August, 2022.
