It is another Saturday morning, and we are wrapping our visits for the Lebanon Java Journey and we found ourselves in the upper east end of the Valley. We decided to stop by a truck-friendly diner east of Fredericksburg, Esther’s Restaurant.
From the outside, it looks like it did the last time I was there in the early mid-90s. Inside, they offer a large seating area with tables and booths. They are still diligently cleaning between parties as you wait in the lobby while they clean your table.

For our meal today we chose the western egg sandwich on a croissant with home fries ($7.25 + $3.50), sausage gravy over a biscuit with dippy eggs ($6.50 + $4.25), and scrambled egg with sausage for our little critic. Our ticket time was a little long this morning. Took about 20 minutes for the food to come out.
The western came with two eggs, ham, cheese, peppers, and onion. I tried to eat as a sandwich… it didn’t work. So open faced style it was. This sandwich was loaded and the flavors simple. The home fries were nicely done to my liking. It was a delicious breakfast for me. I saved the second half for a second meal.
The sausage gravy was homemade and had plenty on the plate. It needed some additional salt and pepper to bring the flavor up. Add in the eggs and it made for a rich savory breakfast dish.
Our little critic was a little hungry this morning. She jumped right into the eggs but was nice enough to share her sausage link with me. It was very good sausage. I wish I would have ordered it with my dish.
Our take: Esther’s offers a diner style atmosphere. The menu offers the standard diner fare. The food is hot and delicious. Their choice of sausage has a nice taste of sweet and breakfast spice. The staff is friendly. It’s worth the trip out to Fredericksburg.
