The late, great American composer Stephen Sondheim will be celebrated this weekend at Mount Gretna Playhouse in Gretna Theatre’s production of ‘Sondheim on Sondheim.’
Sondheim – the composer of Broadway classics including Into the Woods, West Side Story, and Company – died last November, a passing that left the entire theater world in mourning.
The show “Sondheim on Sondheim” was conceived by James Lapine, who had collaborated with Sondheim on Into the Woods and other projects. Lapine’s show draws on interview footage and Sondheim’s timeless compositions to tell the story of the great American composer.
“This piece allows us to indulge in the favorites from every one of Stephen Sondheim’s masterful shows,” said music director Brigitte Rottman in a release.
“He was so gifted at capturing life’s moments in song — including stories about growing up and settling in, the tedium of a work day, the disappointments we face, the bittersweet joys, and mistakes we might make in any season.”
Some of the songs you can expect to hear include: “Being Alive” (Company), “Send In the Clowns” (A Little Night Music), “A Boy Like That” (West Side Story), and “If Mama Were Married” (Gypsy).
The show is being executive produced by Michael Philip O’Brien, with a creative team including Rottman as well as Steve Cargile (scenic designer), Aaron Crosby (lighting designer), Colin Sass (projection designer), Emily Overmeyer (costumer designer), and Jonathan Shuey (sound design). The show runs Thursday, June 23, to Sunday, June 26. There are five showtimes – 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and 2 p.m. matinees on Thursday and Sunday. Tickets range from $15 to $41 depending on seat location.
