We have made the point in previous “Chronicles” that the service we plan for your loved one reflects his or her life as a celebration of the personality as well as the person.
Many are remembered for a special sense of humor. And this is reflected in the service. It becomes a forum to share stories, many of them humorous. This is not only a good idea, but a way to be thankful for having your loved one be part of your life. The sharing invariably has a healing effect on the lives he or she touched.
A friend of mine shared a story he told at his mother’s funeral. He described her as having a “wacky’ sense of humor. The story was about a lawyer who was beckoned to an asylum by one of the patients. He listened to a very rationale explanation of why he was wrongfully committed. The lawyer was impressed enough to promise the patient that he would take action to have the decision overturned.
The patient escorted the lawyer to the gate. The lawyer took two steps on the other side of the gate, when he was struck by a rock that dropped him to the ground. Dazed, he looked up and saw the patient at the gate with a wide-eyed expression on his face. He called out to the lawyer, “You won’t forget will you???”
The son concluded that his mother would not be forgotten, nor will her sense of humor. It was a healing moment for the whole family.
