With plans and materials developed through a curatorial projects course last spring, Lebanon Valley College is hosting an exhibit, Comics Unstripped, in the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery through October 21.

Michael Pittari, LVC professor of art & visual culture, worked with Dr. Barbara McNulty, director of the gallery, to develop the exhibit.

An opening reception will be held tonight from 5 to 7 pm in the Zimmerman Recital Hall. Guests are encouraged to dress up as their favorite comic character (or “cosplay” for the uninitated). The reception is free and open to the public, and college president Lewis Thayne and his wife Dorry Thayne are expected to attend.

Building 8 is the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery, where the Zimmerman Recital Hall is located.

The gallery is open Wednesday, 5-8 pm, Thursday and Friday, 1-4:30 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 11 am-5pm.

Next Thursday September 20th at 5pm, Patriot-News editor Cate Barron will visit with digital comic artist & Penn Live content producer Megan Lavey-Heaton to discuss the paper’s own history with comics, and a look at what the digital comic space entails today. Lavey-Heaton is also well known in the comics space for her work as creator of Namesake.

Additional events are scheduled through the remainder of the exhibit.

On Thursday September 27 at 11am, Dr. Travis Kurowski of York College will present a lecture titled, “Our comics, Ourselves”.

On Wednesday October 3 at 5pm, political cartoonist Tom Gibson will present a lecture titled, “Threats to American Political Cartooning, with Hope that Past is Prologue”.

On Tuesday October 16 at 5pm, comic artist Timothy Truman will discuss his life in comics.

Lastly, for the whole family, a children’s comic workshop will be held on Saturday September 29 from 9am to 11:30am at the Art Studio in Lynch Memorial Hall.
