Hundreds of motorcyclists turned out Saturday morning to participate in an annual Memorial Day Ride honoring all those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The event is organized annually by the local Ridge Runners chapter of the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education. (Find the group on Facebook here.)

Some riders began at Newport in Perry County and then congregated at Fort Hunter Park in Dauphin County before making the ride to Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. The event typically draws hundreds of riders.

Here’s a video posted to Facebook that gives you a glimpse of the scene.

Thanks to LebTown readers Gary and Nancy Heuer for sharing additional pictures and notes with us. Here’s Gary’s report from the event.

At noon the ceremony begins with an opening prayer, this year from Pastor Mac from the Coventry Biker Church. Following a few opening remarks from Mike Gher, president of the Ridge Runners Chapter, were the speakers for the day. Tsgt Susanna B Gyger, Religious Affairs Specialist 111th Attack Wing, Mark Keller, PA State Representative, and John DiSanto, PA State Senator, who rode in with the group ride. Norbert “Ryfus” Pohl, Vice-president of Chapter B of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club made the closing remarks.

The American Legion Riders of Post 751 Enola then performed the Cross Ceremony which includes rituals surrounding the death and burial of a fallen comrade. Dave Drayer, of the Dauphin County Honor Guard, Steelton, then played taps.

Gary noted that there are other ceremonies held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, but if you’re ever able to attend this one you’ll find it very reverent and humbling.

A Memorial Day ceremony was also held Sunday afternoon at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
