Last month fourth grade students at ELCO Intermediate School received trees courtesy of PPL Electric Utilities Community Roots Program during a visit from Lebanon County Conservation District.

LCCD representative Valarie Weaber visited each classroom and gave a brief presentation on soil and water conservation. Following the presentation, students were given their trees and encouraged to take them home and plant them with their families.

Launched in 2017, PPL’s Community Roots provides trees to local governments, environmentally-focused organizations, and elementary schools. Since then, the program has provided over 38,000 trees and it’s expected that 17,700 trees will be planted across PPL’s service area in 2019 alone.

“PPL’s Community Roots program gives the Lebanon County Conservation District an opportunity to meet with the youngest members of our community and show them how even a small act, such as planting a seedling, can help us to fulfill our mission of conserving today’s resources for tomorrow,” said Weaber.

As a part of the program, PPL reminds those receiving trees to keep safety in mind and plant trees where they will not interfere with overhead or underground power lines. Those who received trees are advised to call 811 three business days before they intend to plant their tree so that underground utilities in the area can be marked.
