History buffs may be familiar with a regiment of rifleman formed during the Civil War known as “The Bucktails.”

Arguably the most famous unit to come out of Pennsylvania during the Civil War, The Bucktails were comprised of woodsmen from across the state who could be recognized by the buck-tail attached to their hats; a symbol of pride (and marksmanship).

Each year, a group of “Bucktails” set up a camp to commemorate the historic regiment, and this year a camp will be set up at Myerstown Community Park.

The 26th Bucktail Reunion will take place at the park from August 2 through August 4 and will have a focus on history and family entertainment.

In addition to things happening within the park, there will also be events happening at the nearby Isaac Meier Homestead on Route 501.

According to Myerstown Borough Manager Michael McKenna, the Bucktail Reunion gives Myerstown an opportunity to continue growing in the wake of the borough’s 250th anniversary last year.

“This is a major event for the Borough of Myerstown”, McKenna said in a press release, “We brought the community together throughout our 250th Anniversary in 2018. The Bucktail Reunion is proof that we intend to keep the momentum going.”

The Bucktail camp will open to the public on Saturday, August 3 at 9am.
