This Thursday, August 22, parents and community members are invited to attend a 6:30pm presentation by co-founder and president of Rachel’s Challenge Darrell Scott in the Cedar Crest High School auditorium.
Scott will present to all Cornwall-Lebanon District professional staff during the morning’s In-Service training.
The district is encouraging all parents and community members to attend Scott’s presentation on Rachel’s Challenge.
Since some information that will be discussed at the presentation is graphic, children under 11 should not attend.
April 20, 1999, Scott’s daughter, Rachel was the first victim of the Columbine shooting. After her death, her friends told her parents about her acts of kindness and the six diaries she left behind contained various quotes encouraging kindness and respect.
“Her acts of kindness that were heard from her friends at her funeral and following her funeral have become the basis of one of the largest intervention programs in America today,” said Scott in a video on the Rachel’s Challenge website. “We focus on improving the climate and culture in schools. “
The nonprofit Rachel’s Challenge was formed to reduce bullying, harassment, and violence in schools around the world.
Around 50 Rachel’s Challenge presenters visit over 1,000 schools and 2.5 million students each year, over 24 million people total. More than 500 suicides and at least eight school shootings have been prevented.
“I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same,” Rachel wrote in her last school essay. “People will never know how far a little kindness can go.”
CLSD administrators attended one of Scott’s presentations last spring and invited him to speak to the CLSD community.
Once the school year starts in September, a Rachel’s Challenge presenter will speak to students about the program. Students will also undergo student leadership training to start a Friends of Rachel Club.
