Local theater company the St. James Players (SJP) has announced its first two productions of 2020.

Fun Songs and Fractured Fairy Tales

At 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, the local troupe will kick off the year with a fun fundraiser, A Night of Fun Songs and Fractured Fairy Tales, at St. James Lutheran Church, 53 Chestnut Street, Lebanon.

The cast consists of 22 children ages 8 through 15. They will sing old time songs and perform skits based on classic fairy tales with absurd twists.

One fractured fairy tale features the Wolf from Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf from The Three Little Pigs. They meet at a diner and discuss the struggles they are facing, including what to order for lunch.

Tickets are $10, no reserved seating, and will be on sale starting Jan. 7. You can get them by calling 717-708-6110.

Enchanted Bookshop coming in March; young actors needed, auditions scheduled

Late March will mark the local premiere of The Enchanted Bookshop, a fantastic tale of Margie, proprietor of a failing bookstore, and the characters from classic literature – Tom Sawyer, Heidi, Sherlock Holmes, Pollyanna, Robin Hood, and Dorothy and Toto – who secretly come to life to save it.

Director Karen Gulotta has put out a call for auditions, especially for children ages 8 through 15. No experience is needed.

Auditions are Tuesday, Jan. 28 and Thursday, Jan. 30 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. at St. James Church. No reservation is necessary, just show up.

The 7 p.m. weekend performances of Enchanted Bookshop are set for Friday and Saturday, March 20 and 21, and the following weekend, March 27 and 28. Sunday matinees will take place at 2:30 p.m. on March 22 and 29.

St. James Players is a non-profit organization founded by Gulotta in 2018. Its goal is to unite the community by providing quality local theater with an emphasis on incorporating the talents of young people.

SJP’s most recent production was last month’s stage adaptation of the classic Christmas movie It’s a Wonderful Life. Proceeds benefited Ocracoke, North Carolina, a small coastal island that was battered by Hurricane Dorian and a second massive storm in 2019.
