Every year, the Lebanon County Historical Society (LCHS) holds a variety of events designed to educate and entertain Lebanon residents. The Historical Society has recently announced its 2020 offerings.

The schedule contains free and open Sunday Programs at the Historical Society as well as events that take place in other locations. Take a look at the events here.

Feb.7: First Friday at the Society

Location: 924 Cumberland Street

Time: 5-8 p.m.

Cost: Free

Description: This event will celebrate the opening of the LCHS’ newest parlor exhibit “A History of the Lebanon High School Band.”

Feb. 16: Sunday Program “On the Trail of Dead Presidents”

Location: 924 Cumberland Street

Time: 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Cost: Free

Description: Jeffrey C. Firestone, COO of Dutch Valley Family of Companies, will detail his travels to the gravesites of 39 U.S. Presidents.

March 15: Sunday Program “A History of Wertz Candies”

Location: 924 Cumberland Street

Time: 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Cost: Free

Description: The Wertz Bros. will present a history of local Lebanon business Wertz Candies.

March 28: Downtown Lebanon Bunny Trail

Location: 924 Cumberland Street

Time: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Cost: Free

Description: Participants will make nests for the Easter Rabbit, which is traditionally called the Oschter Haws in Pennsylvania Dutch.

April 19: Sunday Program “It’s Ironing Day”

Location: 924 Cumberland Street

Time: 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Cost: Free

Description: Bob and Susie Lee of Newmanstown will present the history of ironing from the 1700s to the 1950s.

May 16-17: 2020 Canal Days

Location: N. 25th St. at Union Canal Dr.

Time: Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cost: Free

Description: Canal tours, food stands, vendors, and more will be available at the Union Canal Park during this weekend.

June 14: Annual Members’ Meeting

August 21-23: Civil War Weekend

Location: N. 25th St. at Union Canal Dr.

Cost: Free

Description: This weekend, the 29th annual Civil War reenactment will take place.

Sept. 20: Sunday Program “History of Hook & Ladder Fire Company”

Description: City of Lebanon Director of Public Safety and Fire Commissioner Duane Trautman will present a history of Hook & Ladder.

Oct. 30: Gretna Theatre presents “A Tell-Tale Tale

Location: 924 Cumberland Street

Time: 7-8 p.m.

Description: Two actors will bring Edgar Allan Poe’s stories to life, including The Tell-Tale Heart and The Raven.

Nov. 7: Society Ball

Nov. 15: Sunday Program “Shay Family Genealogy”

Location: 924 Cumberland Street

Time: 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Cost: Free

Description: Michael Fay will present a historic mystery, solved by DNA.

Emily Bixler was born and raised in Lebanon and now reports on local government. In her free time, she enjoys playing piano and going for hikes.
