The Paloma School, located on South 6th Street in Lebanon, will host their first virtual 5K event Nov. 20-22.

The virtual race is open to the public and participants can choose to run, walk, bike, or stroll to complete the 5K where and when they please. All participants must complete their race between Nov. 20-22. The Paloma staff hopes to make the fundraiser an annual event in future years to come.

All of the funds raised will go towards supporting the school’s vision to provide a Christ-centered bilingual education to numerous children across Lebanon County. The ultimate fundraiser goal is to reach $10,000 of overall funds.

“Scholarships are the biggest piece,” Amy Martin, the Development Officer on the school’s board, said. “We would love for any student to come to our school and not have to worry about tuition, although we do have ways for any student to be able to come and learn here.”

The funds will help support unique enrichment classes and dance classes, as well as buying necessary school supplies for each classroom.

Registration and donations will specifically go towards:

  • Providing scholarships to families in need
  • Educators training
  • Supplying necessary learning materials

Three years ago, The Paloma School was started by Sheena Stoner. The school delivers education to children as young as pre-k through 9th grade.

“The word paloma in Spanish means dove,” the school explains on its website. “The dove is often recognized as a symbol of peace, as well as a symbol of the Holy Spirit. It is the mission of The Paloma School to live out an expression of peace in our relationships with those around us.”

“The mission is to provide education to all children, both English and Spanish speakers,” Martin said. “Almost all of the teaching is taught in Spanish and the school uses Montessori and hands on based learning in our small class sizes. Normally Paloma’s classrooms are inside but with COVID, the classrooms have been outside when the weather permits. It is an awesome learning experience for the students. The goal is to learn from nature.”

There will also be a chicken BBQ fundraiser for the school on Nov. 20 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The BBQ is open to the community and anyone may buy a dinner for $8 each. Chicken, a drink, a potato and applesauce are all included with the dinner. The BBQ will be held on 439 South 6th Street, Lebanon. All 5K participants can pick up their packets, receive a swag bag, and a chicken BBQ dinner as part of their $25 registration.

The chicken for the BBQ event was donated by Bell and Evans and The Boyd’s Boys will be making the chicken BBQ.

“As a fairly new school, we just want people to learn more about us,” Martin said. “We would love to get people from all over the community for the chicken BBQ.”
