Although this summer has been somewhat mild compared to recent years – like the stretch of 100º+ days in 2019 – the heat and humidity can still be dangerous, especially to older adults.

The Lebanon County Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is seeking to remind older adults of these risks, and offering tips on how to beat the heat.

“On these hot and humid days, it’s important to be aware of the way the extreme heat can affect older adults, and to take steps to protect ourselves, our older relatives, and our neighbors, especially those who do not have air conditioning,” said Carol Davies, administrator of the Lebanon County Area Agency on Agency in a press release.

The AAA suggests the following safety tips for anyone trying to minimize risk from elevated temperatures:

  • Drink lots of water and other liquids, excluding caffeine and alcohol.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and minimize time spent out of doors.
  • Dress for the weather. Wear loose fitting, light-colored clothing to help airflow around the body, a hat and sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Cool down. Seniors who are feeling hot can cool themselves down by taking a moderately cool shower or bath.

The agency also noted that seniors without air conditioning should go to a place that does, for at least part of the day. An easy option is heading over to one of Lebanon’s Senior Centers, which are open to citizens 60 years or older.

You can also consider going to a local library or church, or the Lebanon Valley Mall. If you need help finding a place to go, AAA can provide advice by calling (717) 273-9262.

Lastly, the AAA encourages the public to check on their elderly friends, family, and neighbors during the summer months. Consider offering them a ride to one of the above mentioned cooling locations, or maybe take an air-conditioned drive together over to one of the many great stops profiled in the Lebanon County Food Critics’ Ice Cream Wars series.
