A Berks County microbrewery is in line to become the latest operator of the bar and restaurant on the third floor of the Lebanon Farmers Market building in downtown, replacing the Red-Headed League Public House.

Shillington-based Schaylor Brewing Co.’s web page is proclaiming “Lebanon, PA – COMING SOON!” and Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board records show that Schaylor has applied for a “storage” permit at 33 S. 8th St., the market house’s address.

A Feb. 22 post on the Red-Headed League’s Facebook page said that “we are working on a transition date, as there is another restaurant coming into the space. We’ll share more as we get closer. We just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who has supported us.”

On Mar. 1, Red-Headed League posted on Facebook, “This will be our last week. SATURDAY MARCH 4TH will be our last day open.”

Co-owner Lucan Schmidt confirmed that Schaylor has a storage permit application pending with the PLCB, and that it intends to operate a satellite location at the market house under the Schaylor Brewing name.

“I applied for a storage permit on Feb. 14 and had an LCB rep assigned to me last Friday [Feb. 24] ,” Schmidt told LebTown. But, “I’ve yet to be contacted by the LCB rep, and until we have LCB approval, I can’t put a timeline on [an opening date].”

A storage permit will allow Schaylor to brew beer in Shillington and ship it to the market house.

Because Pennsylvania law restricts sales of wine and spirits at brewpubs to those produced in Pennsylvania, Schmidt said Schaylor will feature wines from Folino Estate Winery in Kutztown and spirits from Hidden Still Spirits in Hershey.

Schmidt said Schaylor at the Market House will feature “pub food” similar to what it serves at its Shillington brew pub.

“It’s going to be very different from what [the Red-Headed League] is doing there now,” he said. “We are going to stay true to what we do, and that’s brewery and pub food.”

“We’re a brewery first,” Schmidt emphasized.

The restaurant and bar area on the third floor of the Farmers Market at 33-35 S. 8th St. in downtown Lebanon began life as Niko’s, which featured a fine dining menu and a cigar lounge. It later housed the Foundry Craft Grillery, which featured oven-fired pizzas. The Foundry closed in early 2019, and the Red-Headed League opened that November.
