Cornwall Iron Furnace will host a free lecture on Tuesday, March 14, at 7 p.m. that’s ‘all about slag.’

Slag – a byproduct of iron blast furnaces that’s typically considered waste – has much more to it than meets the eye.

The presentation will be given by Michael Weber, a guide, researcher, and lecturer at Cornwall Iron Furnaces who graduated from Penn State in 1982 with a geosciences degree. Following graduation, Weber spent 36 years working for the federal government as a scientist, after which he moved to the area and began his volunteer research work on the history of mining and the geology at Cornwall and similar deposits in the commonwealth.

Weber will share a comprehensive overview of slag – what it is, how it’s produced, and why it’s so important.

This will be the Cornwall Iron Furnace’s first in-person presentation since March 2020. The lecture will be held in the Freeman Hall auditorium on the campus of Cornwall Manor. No pre-registration is required to attend in person. The lecture will also be streamed on Zoom, and registration is required for the webinar.

Following the lecture, Mike Emery, site administrator of the Cornwall Iron Furnace, will moderate a brief discussion.
