Applications are open for the annual Alletta Schadler Community Service Award, a scholarship opportunity available to Lebanon County residents pursuing further education in the field of Family and Consumer Sciences.
The award is the gift of Alletta Schadler, a longtime Penn State Extension employee who also served as Penn State’s first female county extension director after being appointed to head the Lebanon County office in 1974. It was offered for the first time last year.

Over her career with Penn State Extension from 1969 to 1999, Schadler spoke at countless community meetings and events and submitted numerous columns to local publications helping to advance the cooperative’s mission of providing science-based information for homeowners and businesses on gardening, farming, food and health, community development, natural resources, and youth development.
Schadler’s main program focus was on food and nutrition, food safety, and food preservation, with additional work in the areas of leadership development, textiles and clothing, and home management.
The $500 annual award will be given to an “outstanding volunteer” in Lebanon County based on the following qualifications:
- The individual is pursuing a degree, continuing education, or professional development in the Family and Consumer Sciences field. It includes areas such as, but not limited to, apparel design, textiles and merchandising, dietetics, food and nutrition science, food safety, public health, health education, hospitality and culinary management, and child and adolescent development.
- The individual has provided outstanding volunteer service in Lebanon County.
Financial need is not a consideration in the recipient selection and individuals are only eligible to receive this award once.
Applications should be submitted by May 15, with this year’s award recipient to be announced May 31.
